Grooming Facts You Probably Don’t Know

Posted by Heather Jabornik on

If there’s one thing we can all agree on other than the fact that nobody actually likes kale, it’s that grooming is a non-negotiable in the land of adulting. Imagine, if you will, the moment you realized you didn’t have to smell like death on steroids after your gym classes of yesteryear—and how your confidence moving through the rest of the day increased TEN FOLD. This is life-altering stuff, people. Now apply it on the daily as a grown adult and you’ve got yourself a one way ticket to Awesomeville. Here are some helpful facts most people don’t know.

FACT: Simply rinsing with water after meals helps prevent cavities and gum disease.

Sure, brushing is better. But if you only have 10 seconds, rinsing with water directly after chowing down is an easy oral hygiene hack. When any bits of food remain in your mouth, oral bacteria uses them to produce acid that end up being the very things that can cause cavities and gum disease. Rinsing helps get rid of food particles and prevents bacterial growth. Rinse and repeat 3x and you’re on your way to starring in your very own toothpaste commercial—or at least having less crap between your teeth.

PRO-TIP: Dentists say to use an antimicrobial toothpaste containing fluoride because it keeps your teeth from rotting. ROTTING. Remember that death on steroids crack? This is real life.

FACT: It’s actually more important to wash your hands to protect yourself from illness than to lather your entire body in soap.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that you can pick up potentially harmful organisms whenever you touch a doorknob or countertop, pet your pet, go to the bathroom, sneeze, prep a meal, perform a diaper change,

You might be surprised to know that Time Magazine talked with Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University, and he claims that in regard to health, showering once or twice week is adequate—unless you stink. Then, for the love of all that is holy, bathe yourself.

Washing too much can lead to dry skin that could crack and allow for infections to waltz right in. So remember, unless your body odor is offending people two blocks over, daily shower frequency is unnecessary for your health.

FACT: Water, salmon and avocados are three inner pillars to healthy skin.

You already know face wash, moisturizer and sunblock are your first line of defense against dirty, dry, sun-damaged skin. There are approximately 8 zillion things you could do on top of these, but the basics will keep your skin from looking like this. What you may not know is that water hydrates from the inside out, and you can actually eat your way to better skin. Salmon and avocados are full of omega 3s and fatty acids that moisturize the skin.

Oh and also, booze and skipping your beauty rest both have the exact opposite effect, so take it easy or enjoy a slow but steady jaunt to mirroring Freddy Krueger.

FACT: Grooming your body hair will make you sweat less.

Your hair is there to regulate your body temperature. When you get hot, you sweat to cool down. Turns out, moisture is attracted to hair. So the less you have on your bod, the cooler you’ll be and the less you’ll sweat.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Great grooming habits can also make you more successful, decrease ingrown hairs, prevent B.O., give you a younger appearance and make your personal relations safer.

If you’ve learned anything, let it be this: Grooming makes you a better person. Or at least it makes you more pleasant to be around. So get grooming for your own sake and for everyone you hang out with.
